Chase the Devil
Max Romeo & The Upsetters · 1976Recording
Recorded in 1976 in Kingston at Lee "Scratch" Perry’s Black Ark Studio with The Upsetters backing Max Romeo. The original release credits Lee Perry and Max Romeo as producers. It stood out as one of the defining tracks from War Ina Babylon and became one of Max Romeo’s best-known recordings. The song helped cement the late-1970s roots-reggae partnership between Romeo and Lee Perry. The track became a lasting reggae standard and was widely reused in later popular music. Its most famous afterlife includes sampling by The Prodigy and Jay-Z and Kanye West, which kept it in circulation far beyond its original release.
