Set Me Free

Set Me Free

Ken Boothe · 1968
Recording

Recorded in Kingston at Studio One and issued with Clement "Coxsone" Dodd as producer; it is Ken Boothe’s reggae treatment of the Supremes’ "You Keep Me Hangin’ On," retitled "Set Me Free." The track turned a Motown hit into a definitive Jamaican rocksteady/reggae cover and became one of Boothe’s best-known Studio One sides. It circulated widely enough to be singled out in later reggae retrospectives and reissues. "Set Me Free" remains a durable reggae standard: it is still included on Studio One compilations and has been sampled by later acts including L’Entourloop and Rico & A.R.T. feat. Typhoon and Maikal X. Its continued presence in reggae catalogues reflects its status as a classic Boothe recording.
