Westbound Train
Dennis Brown · 1975Recording
Recorded in 1973 with Dennis Brown and Winston "Niney" Holness working with the Soul Syndicate band. The song was cut during Holness’s sessions at Joe Gibbs’ studio in Kingston, with the arrangement built around an Al Green-inspired rhythm. "Westbound Train" became one of Dennis Brown’s defining early-1970s hits and helped confirm his breakthrough with Niney the Observer. Contemporary and retrospective accounts place it among the standout songs from Brown’s 1973 run of success. The track has remained one of Brown’s best-known songs and has been repeatedly covered, sampled, and referenced by later reggae artists. Its rhythm and melody also helped inspire related songs such as "Cassandra" and DJ versions built from the same foundation.
