Black Heart Man
Barrington Levy · 1979Recording
It was recorded in 1979 at Channel One Studios in Kingston, Jamaica, as part of Barrington Levy’s Englishman sessions. Henry "Junjo" Lawes produced the track, with the Roots Radics providing the rhythm track and Prince Jammy and Scientist credited as engineers. The track appeared on Englishman, one of Levy’s most popular albums, especially outside Jamaica. It helped define the singer’s early breakout period on the late-1970s dancehall edge of reggae. "Black Heart Man" has remained a durable Barrington Levy deep cut and has continued to circulate through later reissues, including a 2022 7-inch release. Its survival in the catalog underscores the lasting appeal of Levy’s early work with Junjo Lawes and the Roots Radics.
