Higher Ground

Stevie Wonder · 1973
Recording

Recorded in 1973 in New York City at Electric Lady Studios, with Stevie Wonder performing and overdubbing the core instrumentation and vocals himself. The track opened Innervisions and helped define Stevie Wonder’s mid-1970s creative peak, combining spiritual urgency with advanced funk and studio experimentation. It became one of the standout singles from the album and a major pop hit. It remained one of Stevie Wonder’s signature songs and was widely covered, most famously by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Its drum-driven groove and layered production helped shape later funk, soul, and rock interpretations.
