Sugar

Stevie Wonder · 1970
Recording

Recorded in Detroit during the 1969–1970 sessions for Stevie Wonder's album Signed, Sealed & Delivered at Motown's Hitsville U.S.A. studios. Wonder performed lead vocals and keyboards, accompanied by Dennis Coffey on guitar, James Jamerson on bass and Richard 'Pistol' Allen on drums. Released in 1970 on Tamla Records, 'Sugar' was written by Stevie Wonder and Don Hunter and appeared on Wonder's twelfth studio album, Signed, Sealed & Delivered. The recording demonstrated Wonder's expanding role as a songwriter and producer during his transition towards greater creative independence at Motown. 'Sugar' remains part of Wonder's formative Motown catalogue, documenting the instrumental arrangements and vocal approach that preceded his landmark recordings of the early 1970s. Its continued availability through reissues of Signed, Sealed & Delivered preserves an example of his developing production style.
