For the Love of Money
The O’Jays · 1973Recording
Recorded during the Ship Ahoy album sessions at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia with Philadelphia International’s in-house musicians, and produced by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff. Issued as a single from Ship Ahoy, the song became a major crossover hit and a signature example of Philadelphia soul’s polished groove paired with pointed social commentary about greed. Its distinctive wah-driven bass line and refrain have made it a frequent touchstone in pop culture, including use as the theme for NBC’s The Apprentice. The track has also been prominently sampled, notably by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony on “Foe tha Love of $” (1994).
