Something for Nothing
MFSB · 1973Recorded at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia for MFSB's self-titled debut album, Something for Nothing was composed by Kenneth Gamble, Thom Bell and Roland Chambers. Produced by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, the recording featured musicians from the Philadelphia International house ensemble, including Leon Huff on keyboards, Ronnie Baker and Anthony Jackson on bass, Norman Harris on guitar, Earl Young on drums and Larry Washington on percussion, with arrangements by Thom Bell. Released on Philadelphia International Records in 1973, Something for Nothing showcased the orchestral arrangements and tightly coordinated rhythm section that characterised the emerging Philadelphia sound. The instrumental appeared alongside interpretations of Freddie's Dead, Family Affair and Back Stabbers, establishing MFSB as a recording act in its own right rather than solely a studio backing ensemble. Something for Nothing remains part of MFSB's foundational catalogue and documents the musicianship behind Philadelphia International Records' influential early recordings. Its inclusion on the 1995 compilation Love Is the Message: The Best of MFSB and the 2012 Philadelphia International Records 40th Anniversary Box Set has preserved the recording for subsequent generations of listeners.
