Brown Baby

Brown Baby

Billy Paul · 1972
Recording

Recorded in 1972 at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia for Billy Paul’s 360 Degrees of Billy Paul. The track was produced by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Brown Baby was one of the standout cuts on 360 Degrees of Billy Paul, a Philadelphia soul album that Billboard singled out as containing other strong tracks from the Gamble-Huff production team. It also worked as a socially conscious statement in the same album that made Billy Paul a major soul and pop presence. The song remained a deep-cut favorite from the 360 Degrees of Billy Paul era and later showed up in hip-hop sampling; The Professional 3 contains excerpts from Brown Baby. It also stayed in circulation through reissues and later UK single issues.
