Perfect Day
Lou Reed · 1972Lou Reed recorded “Perfect Day” on 31 August 1972 at Trident Studios in London during the Transformer sessions. David Bowie and Mick Ronson produced the track, with Ronson playing piano and arranging the strings. Released by RCA in 1972 on Transformer and as the double A-side to “Walk on the Wild Side,” it became one of Reed’s clearest early solo ballads. Its orchestral restraint and ambiguous lyric helped broaden the emotional range of Transformer beyond its harder New York character pieces. The song became one of Reed’s most widely recognised compositions after its use in Trainspotting and the 1997 BBC Children in Need charity version. It has endured as a modern pop standard through repeated covers, film use and posthumous reassessment of Reed’s songwriting.
