Sun
Caribou · 2010Caribou recorded “Sun” during the Swim sessions at Bryn Derwen Studio in Wales and Pistachio Studio in Hamilton, Ontario. Dan Snaith wrote, performed and produced the track, shaping it around a repeated vocal fragment, layered percussion and fluid electronic arrangement. Released by City Slang and Merge in 2010 on Swim, it became one of the album’s central tracks and followed “Odessa” in defining Caribou’s move toward more club-informed songwriting. Its hypnotic structure and bright, looping vocal motif helped make Swim one of Snaith’s critical breakthrough records. The track remains one of Caribou’s signature recordings from the Swim era and a regular point of entry into his live catalogue. Its later remixes, especially Altrice’s widely circulated version, reinforced its place in the album’s extended dance-music afterlife.
