Break Down

Break Down

We The People · 1972
Recording

Recorded in Detroit by We The People, a little-documented funk group active in the early 1970s. The track was cut as an independent regional release built around a raw rhythm section, prominent breakbeats and call-and-response vocals. The record was largely overlooked on release but became prized among DJs and collectors for its hard funk groove and extended drum passages. It emerged as a staple of rare-groove and breakbeat compilations during the 1980s and 1990s. Break Down became a sought-after break record and has been sampled by numerous hip-hop producers digging for obscure funk sources. Its reputation today rests more on DJ culture and sample-based music than on its original commercial impact.
