Microphone Fiend
Eric B. & Rakim · 1988Recording
Recorded for the 1988 album Follow the Leader, the track paired Rakim with Eric B during the duos MCA period. Eric B produced the single, which was released with Beats for the Listeners on the B side. Released by MCA in 1988, Microphone Fiend became the second single from Follow the Leader and reached number 74 on the UK Official Singles Chart. It became one of Rakims signature performances through its extended microphone addiction metaphor and precise vocal control. The track remains one of Eric B and Rakims defining records and one of the most quoted late 1980s rap singles. Its Average White Band sample and later covers by Rage Against the Machine and Fun Lovin Criminals extended its reach beyond hip hop.
