Time For Livin'
Sly & The Family Stone · 1974Recorded in 1973 at the Record Plant in Los Angeles for Sly & The Family Stone's seventh studio album, Small Talk, Time For Livin' featured Sly Stone on lead vocals and keyboards alongside members of the Family Stone, including Freddie Stone, Rose Stone, Cynthia Robinson, Jerry Martini, Rusty Allen and Bill Lordan. Produced and arranged by Sly Stone, with Freddie Stone credited as co-producer, the recording formed part of the group's final album with its established lineup. Released by Epic Records in June 1974 as the lead single from Small Talk, Time For Livin' reached number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 10 on the Billboard R&B singles chart. Its direct vocal delivery and insistent rhythmic arrangement produced the group's final American Top 40 pop hit, marking the closing chapter of their commercially successful original era. Time For Livin' gained renewed attention when the Beastie Boys recorded a radically reworked version for their 1992 album Check Your Head, introducing the composition to alternative rock and hip-hop audiences. The original remains an important late-period recording in Sly & The Family Stone's catalogue, documenting the band's musical direction before its original lineup dissolved in 1975.
