Superpeople
The Notations · 1974Recorded in Chicago during The Notations' mid-1970s association with Curtis Mayfield's Curtom organisation, 'Superpeople' features Clifford Curry, LaSalle Matthews, Robert Thomas and Walter Jones on vocals. Written by Gerald Dickerson, the recording was arranged and produced by Richard Tufo for the Gemigo label. Originally issued in 1974 and subsequently appearing as the B-side of 'It Only Hurts for a Little While' in 1975, 'Superpeople' combined the group's close vocal harmonies with an upbeat rhythmic arrangement and socially conscious lyrics. The recording attracted particular attention in Britain, where it became one of The Notations' best-known releases. 'Superpeople' developed a lasting following among British soul and rare-groove collectors, remaining popular through specialist DJ sets and compilation appearances. Its inclusion on the 1999 Superpeople compilation and subsequent collections helped preserve the recording's reputation beyond the group's original Chicago audience.
