Planetary Citizen
John McLaughlin & Mahavishnu Orchestra · 1976Recorded during July and August 1975 at Château d'Hérouville in France, 'Planetary Citizen' featured John McLaughlin on guitar, Ralphe Armstrong on bass and lead vocals, Narada Michael Walden on drums and Stu Goldberg on clavinet. Written by Armstrong, the recording was produced by McLaughlin with co-producer Dennis MacKay and mixed at Trident Studios in London. Released in 1976 on Columbia Records as part of the album Inner Worlds, 'Planetary Citizen' showcased the Mahavishnu Orchestra's streamlined four-piece lineup and its emphasis on tightly interlocking rhythms. The composition's prominent bassline, clavinet, driving percussion and vocal passages distinguished it from the group's earlier, more elaborate instrumental arrangements. The recording became a recognised breakbeat among hip-hop DJs and collectors, particularly through its inclusion in the Ultimate Breaks & Beats compilation series. Its distinctive rhythmic arrangement helped sustain interest in the Mahavishnu Orchestra's 1970s recordings beyond their original audience, while Inner Worlds remains an important document of John McLaughlin's experiments with electric instrumentation.
