Skull Snaps · 1973
Recording

Recorded by the Washington, D.C. vocal trio Skull Snaps during the sessions for their only album, Skull Snaps. The recording combined tight harmony vocals with a hard-hitting rhythm section and a distinctive drum break that became one of the album's defining features. Released in 1973, the track received little commercial attention at the time but stood out as one of the strongest cuts on the group's sole LP. Its powerful groove and socially conscious tone reflected the evolving direction of soul and funk in the early 1970s. The recording became highly influential after its rediscovery by hip-hop producers, with its drum break becoming one of the most sampled in music history. It is now regarded as a classic breakbeat record and a cornerstone of crate-digging culture.
