Recording

Naughty by Nature — Treach, Vinnie, and DJ Kay Gee — recorded 'O.P.P.' for their self-titled second album, produced by Kay Gee, building the track around a sample of the Jackson 5's 'ABC' at Trackmasters Studios in Newark, New Jersey. Released in 1991 on Tommy Boy Records, 'O.P.P.' reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the defining hip-hop singles of the early 1990s, introducing a catchy, playful double-entendre hook that crossed over to pop and mainstream radio in a way few rap records of the era managed. The track launched Naughty by Nature from East Orange, New Jersey, into national prominence and is regularly cited as one of the most recognisable hip-hop records of the decade, with its chorus entering everyday American slang and the phrase 'O.P.P.' achieving a cultural currency that outlasted the record itself.
