Recorded at Atlantic Studios in New York during the 1971 sessions for the duo album Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway. The track featured Roberta Flack on piano and vocals, Donny Hathaway on electric piano and vocals, with Ralph MacDonald, Eric Gale, Chuck Rainey, Bernard Purdie, and Jack Jennings on the session. Released in 1972, it became one of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway’s defining duet records and a major R&B and pop crossover hit. It reached number one on the R&B and Easy Listening charts and helped establish the pair as a premier soul duo. The song has remained a duet standard and one of the signature recordings associated with both singers. It has been covered and referenced by later artists and is remembered as a classic of early-1970s soul-pop.
