Recording

Recorded in 1978 at Warner Bros. Studios in North Hollywood, the song was written by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins and produced by Ted Templeman. McDonald sang lead and developed the synthesizer parts with guest keyboardist Bill Payne; Donn Landee engineered the recording. First released on Minute by Minute in 1978, the recording became the band's second American number-one single in April 1979. It won Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 1980 Grammy Awards. Later interpretations by Aretha Franklin, M People and other artists extended the song's reach across generations. The Doobie Brothers' recording entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2024.
