Recording

Recorded in 1978 at A&R Recording in New York for 52nd Street, My Life was produced by Phil Ramone and engineered by Jim Boyer. Chicago members Peter Cetera and Donnie Dacus added backing vocals. The lead single from 52nd Street reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100, extending Joel's commercial breakthrough following The Stranger. Contemporary reviews praised its strong hooks and energetic performance. A cover became the theme for the television comedy Bosom Buddies in 1980. Joel's original recording featured in Adult Swim's 2014 recreation of the show's opening, and a remix accompanied the 2021 trailer for The Shrink Next Door.
