Recording

Recorded in 1976 during the Rumours sessions, with Stevie Nicks writing the song at the Record Plant in Sausalito while the band worked through personal breakups. The recording features Nicks on lead vocal, Lindsey Buckingham on guitars, Christine McVie on keyboards, John McVie on bass, and Mick Fleetwood on drums. Released by Warner Bros. in 1977, Dreams became Fleetwood Mac's only number one single on the Billboard Hot 100. Its restrained arrangement and breakup lyric made it one of the defining singles from Rumours during the album's commercial peak. Dreams remains one of Fleetwood Mac's signature recordings and returned to mass visibility through later covers, samples, and viral use in 2020. Its endurance helped introduce Rumours to successive generations beyond its original 1970s audience.
