Recording

Lowdown was recorded in autumn 1975 at Davlen Sound Studios in North Hollywood, produced by Joe Wissert and engineered by Tom Perry. Co-writer David Paich played keyboards alongside bassist David Hungate and drummer Jeff Porcaro, who subsequently formed Toto. Radio play originating in Cleveland helped turn the album track into Scaggs's breakthrough single. It reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and won Best R&B Song at the 1977 Grammy Awards. Jeff Porcaro's drum groove became a celebrated session performance and was sampled by Moodymann on Don't You Want My Love. The recording also documents the musical partnership that preceded Toto.
