Recording

Recorded in March 1986 at Maison Rouge Studios in London after Mark King developed the song from an added live ending to Physical Presence. Level 42 recorded it with Wally Badarou, who co-wrote the song with King and Boon Gould and reshaped its chorus before the final studio session. Released by Polydor in April 1986, Lessons in Love became Level 42's biggest UK single, reaching number 3 on the Official Singles Chart. It also became a major international hit and introduced the Running in the Family era before the album's 1987 release. Lessons in Love remains Level 42's signature pop crossover hit and one of their most widely recognized recordings. Its tight bass parts, synthesizer layering, and polished production made it a lasting reference point for the band's mid-1980s commercial peak.
