One Step Beyond

One Step Beyond

Prince Buster · 1964
Recording

Recorded in Jamaica in 1964 and issued as the B-side of Prince Buster’s single "Al Capone" on Blue Beat. The track is credited to Prince Buster’s All Stars, with Cecil Campbell (Prince Buster) as the composer and producer. The record sat at the center of Prince Buster’s early ska output and became one of his most recognizable compositions. It later gained wider visibility when Madness covered it in 1979, making it a touchstone of the ska revival. "One Step Beyond" remained a durable ska standard because of the Madness cover and repeated references in later 2 Tone-era culture. The original version is still treated as one of Prince Buster’s signature tracks.
