Madness · 1979
Recording

Recorded in 1979 at Eden Studios in London, with Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley producing for Madness’s debut album era. The 7-inch single version was issued from the same sessions that launched the band’s first album cycle. Released as Madness’s second single, it became a defining early statement of the band’s ska-revival sound. In the UK it reached the Top 10 and helped establish the band as one of the scene’s most visible names. It remained one of Madness’s signature songs and a staple of later compilations and live sets. The track’s enduring popularity kept it closely identified with the wider 2 Tone and ska-revival movement.
