Twist & Crawl
The Beat · 1980Recording
Recorded in London for the Beat’s debut album I Just Can’t Stop It, with the group’s core lineup and producer Bob Sargeant shaping the session. The song was issued in 1980 as the B-side to “Hands Off...She’s Mine.” “Twist & Crawl” became part of the early 2 Tone breakthrough period by appearing on the band’s debut album and on the single that introduced the Beat to a wider UK audience. Its wiry, dancefloor-driven arrangement helped define the album’s fast, punchy sound. The track remained a fan favorite and a key deep cut from I Just Can’t Stop It. Robert Christgau later placed it among the best songs of the 1980s, cementing its status as one of the Beat’s most durable compositions.
