Recording

The Ska-Dows recorded "Apache" for Cheapskate Records, with the single released on 13 June 1980. The band’s album notes place the track at Stage One Studio, London, and contemporary coverage links the recording to the early Cheapskate period around Chas Chandler’s label operation. The track arrived as one of the early ska-revival curios on Cheapskate and quickly drew BBC Radio 1 attention. It was named Record of the Week by BBC DJ Mike Read and reached number one on Radio 1’s airplay chart, giving the band its most visible moment at release. "Apache" became the best-known Ska-Dows track and remained the song most associated with the group in later writeups and ska histories. It is still cited as a notable British ska-revival cover and appears on later retrospectives of the scene.
