The Specials · 1981
Recording

Recorded in April 1981 at Woodbine Street Recording Studio in Royal Leamington Spa, with producer John Collins and engineer/owner John Rivers. The small 8-track setup meant the band built the track up part by part rather than playing live as a full unit. Released as a non-album single in 1981, it captured the recessionary, uneasy mood of Britain and became a defining 2 Tone statement. It reached No. 1 in the UK and was widely praised at the time as a major piece of social commentary. The song remains the Specials’ signature recording and a shorthand for early-1980s Britain, frequently cited in retrospectives on protest music and two-tone culture. It has also been covered and revisited repeatedly, including in later films and new recordings, keeping its cultural reach alive.
