Bar-B-Q

Wendy Rene · 1964
Recording

Recorded in Memphis for Stax in 1964 as Wendy Rene’s second solo single. The record featured Steve Cropper on guitar and was issued as the A-side of the Stax 45 "Bar-B-Q" / "Young and Foolish." The single was cut as a dance-craze novelty record and gained regional traction, with later writers noting that it became a local success and helped establish Rene on the Stax roster. It did not reach the national charts. "Bar-B-Q" later became a cult Stax favorite and was revived in later compilations and soundtrack use, including Once Upon a Time in the Midlands. Its association with Steve Cropper’s writing and Rene’s brief but distinctive Stax run has kept it in circulation among soul collectors.
