Doo Wop (That Thing)

Doo Wop (That Thing)

Lauryn Hill · 1998
Recording

Lauryn Hill recorded the track for her debut solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, during sessions that split time between Kingston, Jamaica, and New York. Hill is the sole credited producer on the original release. Released in 1998 as the lead single from Hill’s debut solo album, the song became a major crossover hit and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It helped define the album’s commercial breakout and established Hill as a solo star after The Fugees. The song remains one of Lauryn Hill’s signature recordings and a touchstone for late-1990s R&B and hip-hop crossover. It has stayed culturally durable through frequent recognition on best-of lists, radio rotation, and continued sampling and performance.
