Recording

Pras recorded 'Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)' featuring Mýa and Ol' Dirty Bastard for the soundtrack to the 1998 film Bulworth, with production by John Forté and Pras himself, building the track around a sample of Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton's 'Islands in the Stream.' Released in 1998 on Interscope Records, 'Ghetto Supastar' reached number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Pras's signature solo hit following his work with the Fugees, demonstrating hip-hop's continued embrace of unlikely sample sources and crossing over significantly into pop and adult contemporary radio. The track remains Pras's most commercially successful solo single and is widely cited as a notable example of late-1990s hip-hop's playful reinterpretation of country and pop standards, with its sample choice and Mýa's hook contributing to its lasting recognisability.
