Joy Division · 1978
Recording

The track was recorded in October 1978 at Cargo Studios in Rochdale for the Factory Records compilation A Factory Sample. Martin Hannett produced the session with Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris. Released on A Factory Sample in 1978, it was one of Joy Division first official recordings and helped introduce the group through the emerging Factory Records scene. The song captured the band transition from punk urgency toward the colder sound that shaped their later work. It remains a key early Joy Division recording and a regular inclusion on retrospectives of the band formative period. The track is also significant as one of the first documents of the group relationship with Martin Hannett and Factory Records.
