Recording

Motown Sounds recorded Bad Mouthin' for the 1978 Motown album Space Dance. Michael L. Smith wrote, produced and arranged the album, with Barney Perkins credited for mixing and John Golden credited for mastering. The track became an underground club record in New York, London and Chicago from the late 1970s onward. It showed Motown adapting its Los Angeles studio resources to extended dance-floor production. Bad Mouthin' retained later dance-culture visibility through DJ play, reissues and modern disco edits. It is widely noted as an inspiration for Bob Sinclar's Gym Tonic.
