Norma Jean Wright recorded Saturday for her 1978 solo album Norma Jean at Power Station in New York City after leaving Chic. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards produced the track, with Chic rhythm-section players including Rodgers, Edwards, Tony Thompson, Raymond Jones, and Sammy Figueroa supporting the session. Saturday was the breakout single from Wright's only solo album for Bearsville Records. It reached number 15 on Billboard's R&B chart and number 10 on the U.S. dance chart, making it her best-known solo club record. Saturday remained a defining Chic Organization production outside the Chic catalogue. Its later visibility was reinforced by charting covers and remakes by East 57th St featuring Donna Allen, Joey Negro featuring Taka Boom, and 100% featuring Jennifer John.
