Tom Zé · 1976Recording
Recorded in 1976 at Sonima in São Paulo during the sessions for Estudando o Samba. Tom Zé performed with a percussion-led ensemble under producer Heraldo do Monte, with arrangements by José Briamonte and engineering by José Antonio Zé Cafi. The track reduced samba to metallic percussion, minimalist guitar and communal chanting, turning the form into an austere rhythmic experiment. It became one of the clearest expressions of the album's deliberate deconstruction of Brazilian musical tradition. The song gained international recognition after David Byrne rediscovered Estudando o Samba and revived interest in Tom Zé's work. It has since been acclaimed as a singular fusion of ancestral rhythm, repetition and avant-garde composition.
