Ralph MacDonald · 1976
Recording

Recorded at Rosebud Recording Studio in New York for MacDonald’s 1976 debut album Sound of a Drum, the track was produced by MacDonald and William Salter. William Eaton arranged and conducted the recording, Richard Alderson engineered it, and Eric Gale contributed the guitar solo. The extended instrumental brought MacDonald’s Caribbean musical roots to the foreground after years as a prominent session percussionist. Eaton’s orchestral arrangement and Gale’s guitar solo framed MacDonald’s percussion as the centrepiece. Its inclusion on the 1977 Saturday Night Fever soundtrack brought the recording a worldwide audience and made it MacDonald’s best-known solo track. AllMusic later singled out its arrangement and guitar playing as reasons for its enduring appeal.
