Recording

Recorded in Los Angeles in June 2002, during the early Get Rich or Die Tryin’ sessions with Dr. Dre and Mike Elizondo after Eminem introduced 50 Cent to Dre. The track was cut with 50 Cent writing to the beat in a single session, with recording by Mauricio “Veto” Iragorri and Sha Money XL. Released as 50 Cent’s lead single and major-label breakthrough, it became his first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 and stayed there for nine weeks. Critics and industry coverage treated it as the song that turned him into a mainstream star. The song became one of the defining rap singles of the 2000s, with a music video that later passed one billion views on YouTube. It has been sampled or interpolated widely and remains one of 50 Cent’s signature records.
