Dirt Off Your Shoulder
JAY‐Z · 2003Recording
Recorded in New York City during the sessions for The Black Album, with Timbaland producing and Jimmy Douglass handling engineering. The track was cut at Baseline Studios with the final mix handled by Tony Maserati. Released as one of the key singles from The Black Album, it turned Jay-Z’s dismissive “brush it off” refrain into a mainstream anthem. Critics highlighted Timbaland’s spare, kinetic production as one of the album’s defining sounds. The song became one of Jay-Z’s signature records and kept the phrase “dirt off your shoulder” in everyday use well beyond its release. Its beat and hook remain widely recognized in hip-hop culture and in later references, performances, and broadcasts.
