Going Back to My Roots

Richie Havens · 1980
Recording

Richie Havens recorded Going Back To My Roots for the 1980 Elektra album Connections. The Lamont Dozier song was produced by Charles Calello for Calello/Lang Productions, with Denny Randell and Calello producing the rhythm tracks and Michael Lang credited as executive producer. The single recast Lamont Dozier's 1977 song as a late-period club and radio record for Havens. It connected Havens's interpretive vocal style to the dance-oriented production of his Elektra period. Going Back To My Roots remained one of Havens's notable late-career cover recordings. The song's broader dance legacy expanded through later versions by Odyssey and later club reissues of Havens's recording.
