Brass Construction developed Movin' from a long band jam for the group's 1976 self-titled debut album. Jeff Lane produced the United Artists recording, with Randy Muller and Wade Williamston credited as writers and Muller central to the band's arrangements and keyboards. Movin' was Brass Construction's breakthrough single in 1976. It reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 1 on Billboard's R&B chart, number 1 on the U.S. dance chart, and number 23 on the UK singles chart. Movin' remained the group's signature record and a foundational Brooklyn funk club track. Its later influence includes sampling by The Bucketheads and MC Hammer and continued placement on funk and dance compilations.
