Private Road

Bent · 2000
Recording

Recorded in 1999–2000 for Bent's debut album Programmed to Love. Zoë Johnston adapted an acoustic song she had recorded at home, then re-recorded its guitar and vocals with Simon Mills and Nail Tolliday. The track introduced Johnston's intimate songwriting and voice to Bent's sample-rich electronic production. It became one of the album's most distinctive vocal performances and helped establish the duo's warmly received debut. The song remains a defining track from Programmed to Love and began Johnston's continuing association with electronic music. Its restrained vocal and acoustic elements have sustained its reputation as an enduring Bent recording.
