Cross The Track

Maceo Parker · 2020
Recording

Recorded in 1974 by Maceo Parker with fellow former James Brown band members including Fred Wesley and the J.B.'s. The session was cut during Parker's brief period as a solo artist and emphasized tight horn arrangements, deep funk rhythms and extended instrumental interplay. Released as a standalone single, the track became one of the definitive post-James Brown funk recordings of the 1970s. Its infectious groove and instantly recognizable horn riff made it a favorite among DJs, dancers and funk collectors. The recording became one of the most sampled funk tracks in hip-hop history, appearing in dozens of rap and dance records. Its horn break and rhythm section have remained staples of breakbeat culture, crate-digging and funk compilations.
