Hurt So Good

Hurt So Good

Susan Cadogan · 1975
Recording

Recorded in Jamaica with producer Lee 'Scratch' Perry, bassist Boris Gardiner and the Zap Pow horn section. Perry transformed Phillip Mitchell's soul composition into a spacious reggae arrangement centred on Susan Cadogan's restrained lead vocal. Released in Britain in 1975, the single reached number four on the UK Singles Chart and remained listed for 12 weeks. Its success established Cadogan internationally and became one of Perry's major crossover productions. The recording remains Cadogan's signature song and a prominent reggae reinterpretation of an American soul composition. Its enduring popularity has preserved its place in British and Jamaican reggae culture.
