Kool & The Gang · 1974
Recording

Recorded at Mediasound in New York for Light of Worlds, the instrumental developed from the vamp of You Don't Have to Change. Robert "Spike" Mickens arranged the track, with Ronald Bell playing its distinctive ARP synthesizer and Mellotron parts. Its spacious arrangement and soaring synthesizer showcased the band's instrumental range during its early commercial breakthrough. Paired with Spirit of the Boogie, it reached number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975. Its keyboard textures became a widely sampled musical foundation, notably on DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince's Summertime. Appearances in Rocky and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, alongside Khruangbin's later cover, extended its cultural reach.
