Summertime

The track was built from sessions for Homebase after Will Smith finished work with Hula & Fingers in Chicago, where the producers handed him the tape that became “Summertime.” It centers on the duo’s laid-back summer groove and the Kool & the Gang sample that anchors the record. Released in 1991 as the lead single from Homebase, it became DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’s highest-charting single on the Billboard Hot 100 and also reached No. 1 on the US R&B chart. It was widely received as a defining summer rap anthem and won the duo a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. The song remains the duo’s signature hit and one of the most recognizable summer songs in hip-hop, continuing to recur in pop culture, playlists, and anniversary tributes. Its long afterlife is tied to its enduring chorus, its Philadelphia summer imagery, and its sample-driven production.
