Crystal Waters co-wrote the song with Neal Conway, and the original demo led to her signing and the track’s release from her debut album Surprise. The single was issued by Mercury in 1991 and credited to The Basement Boys for production. The song became Crystal Waters’ breakthrough hit, reaching the top ten on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. It also became a defining house record of 1991 and a major club crossover success. The track remained a staple of 1990s dance-pop and has been widely sampled and interpolated, including by later pop and rap records. It continued to circulate through remixes, club culture, and crossover references well into the 2020s.
