Funky Stuff
Kool & The Gang · 1973Recorded in April and May 1973 at Mediasound Studios in New York City for Kool & The Gang's fourth studio album, Wild and Peaceful. Produced and arranged by Kool & The Gang, with Jeff Lesser and Harvey Goldberg engineering, the recording featured Robert 'Kool' Bell on bass, Ronald Bell on saxophone and keyboards, Claydes Smith on guitar, George Brown on drums, and the group's distinctive horn section. Released in September 1973 on De-Lite Records, 'Funky Stuff' became the group's first major crossover hit, reaching number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number five on the Billboard R&B singles chart. Its insistent bassline, tightly syncopated instrumental arrangement and energetic group vocals established the commercial direction that would produce subsequent hits 'Jungle Boogie' and 'Hollywood Swinging'. The recording became a foundational part of Kool & The Gang's early catalogue and a significant source of samples for hip-hop producers. Its rhythmic elements were incorporated into recordings by the Beastie Boys, Gang Starr and N.W.A, extending the song's influence beyond its original release and reinforcing its enduring popularity among DJs and collectors.
