Strange Overtones

David Byrne and Brian Eno · 2008
Recording

The track was made for David Byrne and Brian Eno’s second collaborative album, with Leo Abrahams contributing to the writing and production. It was assembled from home-studio recordings made between London and New York during 2006–2008. Released as a free-download lead single from Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, it announced the Byrne-Eno reunion after their earlier work together. Its self-aware lyric made it a widely noted song about the act of writing pop music. The song remained one of the best-known late-career Byrne-Eno collaborations and continued to appear in discussion of their partnership. It also drew further attention through later cover versions.
