At the River
Groove Armada · 1997Groove Armada wrote and recorded the track in a rented house in Ambleside in the Lake District, with Tom Findlay and Andy Cato using a sampler and keyboard. The vocal sample came from Patti Page’s “Old Cape Cod,” and Cato’s trombone line was captured on the house hi-fi system during the session. Released in 1997 as a limited 7-inch pressing of 500 copies on Tummy Touch, the track became the duo’s breakthrough after radio support pushed it into wider circulation. Its understated, melancholy feel helped make it a defining chill-out record of the late 1990s. The song became one of Groove Armada’s signature tracks and was later used in major advertising campaigns and films, extending its reach well beyond its original release. It remains closely associated with the duo’s early career and the late-1990s British downtempo scene.
